The Newsboys with John James |
The original Newsboys started in 1985, in Queensland, Australia. The two main people who got it started were Peter Furler on the drums and George Perdikis. They invited John James along to sing vocals. In 1997 John James needed to focus on keeping his family and marriage together, and he quit the Newsboys. Peter Furler stepped up to the microphone and took over vocals, leaving Duncan Phillips as the drummer. In 2009, Peter Furler needed to take a sabbatical and left the Newsboys. The lead singer was taken over by DC Talk's Micheal Tait. He is still one of the lead singers today.
Micheal Tait |
In 2017, the idea of a united Newsboys emerged. Would it be possible to have Peter Furler rejoin the group without kicking Micheal Tait out? Phil Joel, the band's guitarist who had left the band in 2006 had eventually joined Zealand Worship. Many members had to make sacrifices, but the band got together and now form Newsboys United. They are wildly successful in the CCM world, mashing Micheal Tait's powerful vocals and Peter Furler's classic voice to add a new sound to CCM radio, a sound that was once lost. It gives off DC Talk vibes when the "rap, rock, and soul" motto is considered. This collaboration of genres makes Newsboys United stand out from other CCM.
