A Little Newsboys History

John James Newsboys
The Newsboys with John James

The original Newsboys started in 1985, in Queensland, Australia. The two main people who got it started were Peter Furler on the drums and George Perdikis. They invited John James along to sing vocals. In 1997 John James needed to focus on keeping his family and marriage together, and he quit the Newsboys. Peter Furler stepped up to the microphone and took over vocals, leaving Duncan Phillips as the drummer. In 2009, Peter Furler needed to take a sabbatical and left the Newsboys. The lead singer was taken over by DC Talk's Micheal Tait. He is still one of the lead singers today.

Micheal Tait

In 2017, the idea of a united Newsboys emerged. Would it be possible to have Peter Furler rejoin the group without kicking Micheal Tait out? Phil Joel, the band's guitarist who had left the band in 2006 had eventually joined Zealand Worship. Many members had to make sacrifices, but the band got together and now form Newsboys United. They are wildly successful in the CCM world, mashing Micheal Tait's powerful vocals and Peter Furler's classic voice to add a new sound to CCM radio, a sound that was once lost. It gives off DC Talk vibes when the "rap, rock, and soul" motto is considered. This collaboration of genres makes Newsboys United stand out from other CCM.

After nine years of no releases, (other than, of course, Amazing Grace with her brothers, Joel and Luke from ForKING&COUNTRY,) Rebecca St. James released Dawn on July 24, 2020.

This beautiful album consists of seven songs. In the  fifth song, Dawn, she features Luke Smallbone. The album Dawn also features Josh Baldwin and Brandon Lake.

What about Rebecca, herself? Rebecca is married to Jacob "Cubbie" Fink. She and Cubbie live in Nashville, TN with their three kids, ages six, two, and a newborn, who was born August 2020!

I personally think this album is beautiful. You can hear in the lyrics that the songs are very relevant for Rebecca. My favorite song in this album is The Battle is the Lord's, with Brandon Lake. The acoustic version especially is a very pretty song.

I think some of the samples used in the background of the songs don't sound great, but maybe that's what earned this album the genre of rock, pop, and funk. Her voice is amazing in my opinion, and the lyrics aren't fluffy, but carry good messages. Overall, I'd give this album an 8/10

Hey guys! Welcome to my blog.

I'm going to be posting about news on Christian artists today, and my take on what's happening.

There are also some old, lost mysteries that I'm going to uncover and dive into.

Hope you enjoy!
